Methodology · How We Rank
How we rank — and how we keep it true.
Most "best of" lists are vibes with a shopping link. Ours are scores with a paper trail. This page publishes exactly how a Young Cotton verdict is built, how often the underlying data is re-checked, and what happens when we get something wrong. It is not fine print — it is the product.
The score: 100 points, five criteria
Every ranked product is scored by the data team against the same criteria. Weights are published here and do not change per article — if they ever change, this page changes first and the change is dated.
| Criterion | Weight | What we actually check |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric & materials | 30 | Cloth composition and weight, weave quality, hand feel, how the material is described vs. what it is |
| Construction & collar/craft details | 20 | Stitching, hardware, collar construction (for shirts), finishing — the parts that fail first |
| Fit range & sizing honesty | 20 | How many fits/sizes are offered, whether the size chart matches reality, who the cut leaves out |
| Value | 15 | Price against the field — not "cheap good, expensive bad", but what each dollar buys you here |
| Longevity | 15 | Expected lifespan: fabric durability signals, care burden, whether the design survives trend cycles |
Scores have teeth. A product can score in the 40s, and when one does, we say why in plain language. A brand's reputation earns it a place in the test — never points.
The re-check programme
Prices, size charts, stock status and product specs drift constantly. Our data team re-verifies ranking data on a rolling cadence — flagship rankings at least monthly, seasonal pieces before each season turns — and every article displays its "Prices & data checked" date in the byline. If a price moved or a product changed since the stamp, the stamp is wrong and we want to know.
Corrections policy
When we publish an error — a wrong price, a stale size chart, a fact that aged out — we correct the article, update its "Last updated" stamp, and note material corrections at the foot of the piece. Quiet edits to hide mistakes are not how a research platform behaves.
Editorial standards
Original analysis only. We do not copy or paraphrase other publications' reviews, roundups or photography. Facts we state — prices, dates, measurements, garment history — are sourced and dated by the data team. Where we use photography, it is license-clean and credited on the page.
Opinions are labelled by being obvious. Verdicts, calls and takes are the editor's voice, argued in the open. The facts underneath them follow the standards above. You should always be able to tell which is which — and disagree with the opinion while trusting the data.
Grooming content is cosmetic guidance. Our grooming coverage covers routines and cosmetic care only. We make no medical or treatment claims, and grooming pieces go through advisor review before publication.
Commerce, plainly. Some outbound links on this site may earn the magazine a commission through its commerce partners — see our Disclosure. Commissions never buy points, placement or mercy: the lowest-scored product in any ranking is proof of that, and it stays in the ranking precisely because it earned its score.
