Brands Like Carhartt: 7 Ranked, Scored, and Priced

The want underneath the search: canvas that outlasts the job, cut boxy, priced for the people who wear it out.

Checked and updated October 2026

The verdict, up front: seven brands scored out of 100 on the published brand basis: fabric and cloth 30, construction and craft 20, fit range and sizing honesty 20, value 15, longevity 15. Filson wins at 85, the step up executed without compromise. Stan Ray is second at 80, the Texas original that still makes work clothes in the USA for under $100. The anchor, Carhartt mainline, lands third at 77, and its own fashion arm, Carhartt WIP, is scored in the open at 69, selling the same Detroit jacket idea at $298 against the mainline's $129.99. The named skip is fast-fashion workwear styling at 42.

What people actually want from Carhartt

The want under this search is the oldest in menswear: cloth that outlasts the job. Twelve-ounce duck canvas that softens over years instead of failing in months, double knees, triple stitching, pockets placed by use. It is the boxy work cut, room to move built into the pattern rather than tailored out of it. It is prices set for people who bill by the hour, a Detroit jacket at about $130, not $300. And it is the complete absence of fashion signalling: the square label is a maker's mark, not a flex. Every brand below is scored against those four wants, including the anchor itself.

What the anchor does badly is range discipline. The icons are the real thing, but the line around them has spread into licensed and basic product that trades on the canvas reputation in thinner cloth, a warning our American ranking printed when it scored Carhartt 77: buy the icon, not the line extension. The second deduction is not Carhartt's fault but is its problem: the name now fronts a European fashion operation, WIP, whose prices teach the market to read workwear as a luxury good. Both Detroit jackets are scored below, with both prices printed, and the fashion arm does not enjoy being on the page.

How the scores work

Same ruler as every brand ranking on this site, published on our methodology page: fabric and cloth out of 30, construction and craft out of 20, fit range and sizing honesty out of 20, value out of 15, longevity out of 15. Brands already scored in our roundups keep their number here: Filson carries its 85 and Carhartt its 77 from the American ranking. The rest are scored fresh on the same basis, against the want decoded above. Where a brand appears in two of our systems, in our overshirts Verdict Card, say, the garment scores there are for the garment; the brand scores here are for the house.

Filson

US price at last check: the Wool Jac-Shirt $349 at the maker's store; the Mackinaw Wool Cruiser about $550.

The call: the want with the brakes off. Filson builds the same workwear idea, canvas and wool for people outdoors all day, at the heaviest cloth weights in the field, with a repair culture that treats a decade as a starting point: longevity takes full marks. It keeps the 85 from our American ranking. The deduction is the bill, and it is printed in the price line: this is the step up, not the substitute, and it knows it.

#2 · 80/100 The US-Made Answer

Stan Ray

US prices at last check: fatigues $85 to $99 at the maker's store, made in the USA.

The call: the closest living relative, and the better buy. A Texas maker sewing fatigues, painter pants and chore coats in the USA since 1972, in duck, sateen and ripstop, at prices that still describe work clothes. It beats the anchor on construction honesty across the whole range, not just the icons, and loses only on fit range and findability: you will have to look for it, and the looking is worth $30 a garment.

#3 · 77/100 The Anchor

Carhartt

US price at last check: the Iconic J01 Duck Detroit Jacket $129.99 to $139.99 at the maker's store.

The call: scored in the open, the anchor finishes third on its own page and keeps the 77 from our American ranking. The icons, the Detroit, the double-knee pant, the chore coat, remain the value benchmark of the whole category: real duck canvas at $130. The deductions are the spread around them: licensed basics in ordinary cloth, and a mainline range so wide that the label alone no longer tells you what you are holding. Buy the icons in your work size, not your fashion size.

Dickies

US price at last check: the Original 874 Work Pant $29.99 at the maker's store.

The call: the working floor, and an honest one. The 874 is an 8.5-ounce polyester-cotton twill, which is the whole trade printed in one line: less cloth than the anchor, at a quarter of the jacket money, in the widest fit range on this page. Value takes full marks because $29.99 for a pant that survives a year of real work is not a compromise, it is a different and legitimate answer. It loses where poly-twill always loses: it will never soften into anything, and it will not see year five.

Ben Davis

US prices at last check: work pants and shirts typically $40 to $60.

The call: the West Coast original the search forgets. San Francisco workwear since 1935, the gorilla cut, half-zip work shirts and twill pants that whole regional styles were built on, still priced in the $40 to $60 band. It scores below Dickies on distribution and range rather than on the clothes, and above the fashion arm below on the only row that matters here: the price still describes a work garment.

Carhartt WIP

US price at last check: the OG Detroit Jacket $298 at the WIP store.

The call: the anchor's own shadow, scored in the open. The cloth is genuinely good, 12-ounce Dearborn canvas, triple-stitched, which is why fabric holds at 23. Then the bill arrives: $298 for the Detroit idea the mainline sells at $129.99. That gap is not construction; it is distribution, retail theatre and a fashion margin, and value scores it at 5. Buy it if the slimmer silhouette is the want. Do not mistake the price for a better work jacket.

H&M Workwear-Look Lines

US price at last check: about $35.

The call: the styling without the substance, the recurring villain of this site's rankings. Carpenter loops and canvas-look cotton at half the canvas weight, bar tacks where the triple stitching should be, a silhouette copied from garments built to be repaired and made to be replaced instead. It is the same arithmetic we printed at 48 in the chinos ranking: workwear is the one category where the cheap version is not a version at all.

The pattern under the ranking

Two rules fall out of the ladder. The first: in workwear, price still describes cloth at the honest end of the market and stops describing it at the fashion end. Between $29.99 Dickies and $349 Filson, every step up buys measurable weight, stitching or repair. Between the $130 mainline Detroit and the $298 WIP Detroit, the step buys a slimmer cut and a different shop. The second rule: the category's quality is carried by its specialists. The two brands that do almost nothing else, Stan Ray and Ben Davis, hold their scores on construction honesty across their whole ranges, while the giants score on their icons and apologise for their edges. The work shirts themselves, flannel, chambray and denim, are indexed in our shirt index, and the layer that goes over all of this is ranked in the overshirts Verdict Card.

The Skip · 42/100

The fast-fashion workwear line, about $35 in the US, is this page's named loser, and in this category the charge is heavier than usual. A fashion garment that fails costs you a season. A work garment that fails costs you the day it tears, on the job it was pretending to be built for. Canvas-look cloth at half weight is not a cheaper work jacket; it is a picture of one. The real thing starts at $29.99 and has since 1967.

Which one to buy

If you buy one piece: the mainline Detroit, in your work size, and let it soften for a decade. If you want the want without the label tax: Stan Ray fatigues and a chore coat, US-made, under $200 the pair. If money is no object: Filson, and use the repair programme when the decade is up. If the budget is the whole story: the 874, honestly bought, beats the cosplay at twice its price. If you were really shopping the silhouette: WIP, eyes open, at $298. The trousers these jackets work over are ranked in our chinos Verdict Card, and the other two pages in this family score the resort want in brands like Tommy Bahama and the Paris want in brands like A.P.C.

Questions, answered

What brand is most like Carhartt?

Stan Ray, out of Texas. It has made work pants and chore coats in the USA since 1972, in the same duck and fatigue cloths, at the same honest prices: fatigues run $85 to $99 at its own store. It scores 80 on this page, three points clear of the anchor, because it kept the whole recipe, canvas, cut and price, while the anchor's range spread into licensed basics. Filson scores higher at 85, but as the step up, not the substitute.

Is Carhartt WIP worth the money?

As clothing, mostly; as workwear value, no. The WIP OG Detroit Jacket is $298 at the WIP store, against $129.99 to $139.99 for the mainline J01 Detroit at carhartt.com: the same jacket idea, the same 12-ounce canvas family, at roughly 2.3 times the price for slimmer cuts and fashion distribution. WIP scores 69 on this page, last but one, and the deduction is almost all value. Buy WIP if you want the silhouette. Buy mainline if you want the garment.

Carhartt or Dickies: which is better?

Carhartt, 77 to 72 on this page, and the gap is cloth. Carhartt's icons are 12-ounce cotton duck and double-knee builds; the Dickies 874 is an 8.5-ounce polyester-cotton twill that trades cloth for price, at $29.99 the cheapest serious work pant in America. Dickies wins on fit range and on price, and loses on what the clothes are made of. For work you will do for years, Carhartt. For a uniform you will replace, Dickies, without apology.

Why is Carhartt WIP more expensive than Carhartt?

Because it is a different company selling to a different customer. WIP is a European operation that has licensed the name since 1994 and re-cuts the workwear archive as fashion, with fashion's distribution costs and margins. The cloth overlaps; the pricing logic does not. The mainline prices for people who bill by the hour. WIP prices for people who bill by the post. Both facts are printed in the two Detroit prices: about $130 and $298.

What is the best workwear brand overall?

On our published basis, Filson at 85: the heaviest cloth in the field, construction that assumes decades, and a repair culture that keeps the garments in service. It also charges about $550 for the Mackinaw Cruiser, which is why value is its only weak row and why the working answer for most men is the pair below it: Stan Ray for the make, Carhartt mainline for the icons. The best workwear brand is the one whose prices still describe clothing.

How this ranking stays honest

Scores follow our published methodology and are re-checked on the cadence in the byline. Prices are US prices at last check: the Detroit jackets, the 874 and the Filson figures are the makers' own store prices; where a brand's line is priced in a band rather than a figure, the card prints the band and says so. When a maker changes cloth or price materially, the score moves and the move is noted here.
